What is ARIPO?

ARIPO is a regional intellectual property office which is mandated to grant Patents, register Trademarks, Utility Models and Industrial Designs on behalf of its member states.  The member states Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Trade mark protection at ARIPO is done through the Banjul Protocol on Marks.  It allows the office to accept applications filings on behalf some of the states party to this protocol.  ARIPO member states that are party to the Banjul Protocol are Botswana, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Applicants can designate at least any number of the states on an application.

The Protocol also requires that all applicants who are not residents or who do not have places of business resident in any of the member states be represented by trade mark agents or representatives resident in any one of the member states.
