GS1 Identification Keys
GS1 Identifications Keys form the cornerstones of supply chain excellence for industry. When this powerful identification system is combined with GS1 BarCodes, EPC tags, eCom business messages, and the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), the connection is made between these physical or logical things and the information the supply chain needs about them. With the connection made, one world of global commerce comes into view.
Composition of GS1 Identification Keys
Each set of GS1 identification keys is composed of:
? GS1 Prefix which is a unique number assigned by the GS1 to each GS1 member organization.
? GS1 Company Prefix which is a unique number assigned by the local GS1 member organization to each member company.
? GS1 Reference Item which is a unique number assigned by the member company to each individual object like product, location, shipment, etc.
? GS1 Check Digit which is a number calculated by the module-10 formula.
Types of GS1 Identification Keys
There are nine types GS1 Identification Keys that support the identification of items, services, locations, logistic units, returnable containers, etc. The GS1 Company Prefix assigned to a user company allows that user company to create any of the GS1 identification keys.
Identifying a product with a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the first step in making the value chain more visible, secure, and sustainable. A GTIN is used to uniquely identify trade items, which are products and services that are priced, ordered, or invoiced at any point in the supply chain. It is also a key component of e-commerce transactions and communications. With GTINs, brand owner can identify any item and retrieve information from databases, such as price, sale and order, making it more visible and laying the foundation for capturing and sharing information in an efficient, collaborative value chain.
Example: 4891668326698
Global Location Number (GLN)
Global Location Number (GLN) is used to identify locations and legal entities. Locations can be a physical place such as a building, warehouse, warehouse gate, loading dock, delivery point or even a specific shelf within a store; they can be a legal entity such as a company. Using a GLN rather than a proprietary internal numbering system for locations gives company significant advantages as it provides a standardized way to uniquely identify locations important to the supply chain. The GLN is a prerequisite for efficient electronic commerce, Global Data Synchronization and enables other applications too.
Example: (410)4891668000008
Serial Shipping Containter Code (SSCC)
A Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is used to identify individual logistic units such as cartons, pallets, or air cargo containers of trade items. The SSCC enables a unit to be tracked individually, providing benefits for order and delivery tracking and automated goods-receiving.
Example: (00)048916680000000015
A Global Returnable Asset Identifier is used to identify a reusable package or transport equipment of a certain value such as a gas cylinder, pallet or a crate. The GRAI can be used for asset identification and tracking purposes, or it can be part of a hiring or rental system where two or more companies collaborate as it allows enterprises scan assets into and out of their businesses.
A Global Individual Asset Identifier (GIAI) is used to uniquely identify fixed assets of any value within a company such as office equipment, computers, vehicles and equipments. The GIAI provides a format to encode both the GS1 Company Prefix and the individual asset number or serial number. For example, the GIAI can be used on medical or surgical instruments for automatic identification and data capture management of instruments within the micro-logistics cycle of use, cleaning and sterilization. It also supports business processes such as product recalls and item traceability.
A Global Service Relation Number (GSRN) is used to identify a service relationship between a business and a client, such as club membership, loyalty programs and hospital admissions, GSRN is normally assigned by the service provider.
A Global Document Type Identifier (GDTI) is used to identify a document by type, such as insurance policy proof of shipment form, internal invoice, phone bill and graduate certificate. A company or a business will issue a GDTI where it is important to maintain a record of the document. The GDTI will provide a link to the database that holds the ‘master’ copy of the document.
A Global Shipment Identification Number (GSIN) is used to identify a grouping of logistics units that comprise a shipment from one consignor to one consignee (buyer) referencing a dispatch advice and/or Bill of Lading (BOL). Assignment of the GSIN must comply with the regulations of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
A Global Identification Number for Consignment (GINC) is used to identify a logical grouping of logistics units that are assembled to be transported together under one transport document. A consignment identifies a grouping for transport purposes and must not be confused with a shipment which identifies a grouping for trade purposes.
